The Godalming Writers' Group met for the first time in July 2015. It was formed by a few like-minded people who, knowing that writing can be a lonely business, met to share their mutual passion for it. Meetings were as much social as creative. We were all at different stages in our writing careers. Some had long-forgotten drafts in bottom drawers and others were new writers who felt a need to express themselves through writing. And some were in between. At first we came together to learn, discuss and laugh at our common mistakes and share the loneliness of writing. We discussed the pain of a blank page that stares back. Of sitting in front of a screen waiting for the words to tumble forth and somehow form the masterpiece that we all knew existed inside us.For some it strengthened our determination to continue writing with the belief / hope that our efforts would be rewarded in some way. Perhaps. However, soon things changed. We agreed we wanted to create something together. To create a book that might sit proudly on our bookshelves. To be published. But what? And how?The inspiration came from our Town. Godalming. We decided to write a book of short stories with Godalming at their heart. With inevitable ebbs and flows over the year, we finally produced Godalming Tales 1. Nine authors had written 23 stories of all types: fiction and non-fiction and a mixture of both. We entered the world of self-publishing with an e-book and a real, paperback. We advertised it as best we could with articles in local newspapers and magazines. We even presented an evening of dramatized readings to the local Rotary club and sold them a few copies. Our relative success inspired us to write a second book which we rather imaginatively named Godalming Tales 2. By now our group of authors had grown to 14. And we have our own page on Facebook: https://facebook.com/GodalmingWritersGroup/If you enjoy these tales with a Godalming link, please write a review on Amazon, Goodreads etc. so that others may enjoy them too.
