Ferris realizes Brand's struggle with his Nazi heritage and his relationship with an accepting mother. Later, visiting Ferris in Madrid, Brand discovers the black genius of Goya's paintings and becomes determined to bring that dark artistry to his photography. Ferris watches a talented man being distroyed by defeated aspirations of immortality. In this novel, H.E.Francis captures the most horrifying glimpse into the nature of his friend's character.
