Grandma Esther is an active woman who grew up in Lithuania. Like many Jewish people, she lost her family during World War II. Now she lives in Brooklyn, New York, and volunteers for the Yiddish Scientific Institute, an organization devoted to preserving Yiddish language and culture. She also spends a lot of time with her granddaughters, seven-year-old Pamela and eleven-year-old Allison, who live in Manhattan. from their grandmother, the girls learn much about the family and its traditions and values. Often when they are together, they read, sing, play games, and cook favorite family recipes together.
