More than 140,000 readers around the world savor the fiction, reportage, polemics, autobiography, history, and travel writing presented in Granta. Contributors such as Paul Theroux, Salman Rushdie, Nadine Gordimer, and Mary Karr deliver writing that is controversial and thought-provoking, powerful and urgent, making Granta the freshest international writing of this decade. -- Newsweek
I completely disagree with the one star review below. The writing is as always excellent. The photo essay (with picture of two old men publicly engaged in oral sex) didn't offend in the least. I can't imagine anyone getting in trouble with 'the police' or 'customs' by publishing the subject photo essay, which is clearly shot for artistic purposes (remember the 1st amendment?). Granta has published at least one photo essay of ports around the world before, which, included at least of few pictures of women who clearly appeared to be prostitutes. I didn't see any complaints. And no Granta isn't geared to middle of the road easily offended readers. If something like that photo essay offends please go back to reading the New Yorker - it has lots of funny cartoons just like Reader's Digest.
