Great Composers is a great companion - a knowledgable friend
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 27 years ago
I have this book and I wanted another copy for my son because I think it is one of the best publications I have ever seen for those who have discovered classical music without the benefit of earlier knowledge or education in the subject. It is almost five hundred pages covering the lives of twenty six of the major composers whose names we have all heard but may know little about. It is profusely and beautifully ilustrated with reproductions of paintings, engravings and photographs and these are accomapnied with a text which is easy to read giving the feeling of real insight into the almost daily lives of these people who in many other published form are often made to seem part of a stuffy and remote past. For newcomers to classical music it adds another dimension to enjoyment of the subject far away from the jargon of academia and closer to the real lives which created it. I hope it is put back into print.
