The Great Gatsby appeared in 1925 during the economic boom of the "Roaring Twenties" after the end of World War I. At the end of the decade, Fitzgerald begins the writing of Tender is the Night, which he could not finish until 1934 because of the constant health problems of his wife. We intend to show that the underlying theme throughout the novel isn't about the broken romance between Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan, but about closeted homosexuality. This may be construed as a harsh interpretation, but it is justifiable criticism which is supported by the text.
