Possibly the worst hunter in prehistoric Europe, Grunt is a failure when it comes to providing food for his tribe--but soon he discovers a skill far greater than any weapon. From bears to bison,... This description may be from another edition of this product.
My boys (ages 5 & 2) and I absolutely love this book! I normally obtain most of my kid's book from the library. It's only for the very best that I bother to purchase a copy. Soon I will have to buy a 2nd copy as the first has been worn out -- too throughly loved! The pages are spilling over with beautiful and exciting art that is so vivid you find yourself carefully turning the pages so as not to "squish" all the life-like animals and people or disrupt the action potrayed! The story is about how a scorned young boy uses his unique skill of cave painting to attract game to his tribe. And how against Grunt's cautioning, the greed of his tribe brings about the Pleistocene (ice-age) extinction. My youngest boy loves the book because I've taught him how to make all noises of the different animals. My older boy loves to search out (in a "Where's Waldo" like fashion) and count all the different kinds of animals (10 mammoths, 15 prehistoric bison, 31 horses, 1 cave bear, etc.)I love the book because it teaches kids (and adults) that everybody can make special contributions even if they aren't very good at popular things -- in Grunt's case -- hunting. The message of wildlife conservation and extinction is particularly important to me. I also like how accurately Timothy Bush centers the story around the idea of the Pleistocene Extinction being human caused and how the loss of mega-fauna led to domestication. The only reason I DONT GIVE 5 STARS is because Bush shows the tribe using teepee houses and bows and arrows instead of atlatls and darts. A minor inaccuracy to be sure, but important for a hard-core student of the Pleistocene like me.Overall, a fantasic and amusing story. It should grace the shelves of every elementry classroom and and every child's bookshelf. TRUST ME! WORTH EVERY PENNY!
