Nothing has been the same for Hannah since her sister Rebecca went away to work at the mill when Rebecca was home, the two of them took care of the house and their little sisters together, and the dull housework was almost fun. Now Rebecca is a long stagecoach ride away. But her birthday is coming, and Hannah is determined to make her sister the most beautiful present that she can-a present that, in the end would surprise everyone, not just Rebecca!
The book is about a girl named Hannah. She has two twin sisters, a baby sister and a big sister called Rebecca. She also has a father, but their mother died. This means Hannah has to do all the housework. I feel that it's not fair . They leave the eldest, Rebecca, in charge but she goes out and asks Hannah to do her all of her work. I like the book because Hannah's family thought that there was no time for pretty things or "fancy notions" - but Hannah knew better. I dislike the way they give Hannah all the work to do all the time.
Very charming

A nice alternative to the American Girls series, this takes place during the Industrial Revolution, where older sister Rebecca works in the textile mills to help the family out. Hannah is left to all the housework and worries about her family, especially her tired sister and her grieving widower father. She tries to make a 'fancy box'for Rebecca's birthday; but it is when the box becomes a family project that success and healing follow.
