Just been diagnosed with high blood pressure? Don't fret you're not alone. In fact, you're a member of a club that includes an estimated one-quarter of the world's population But just because it's common doesn't mean you should treat it lightly. If you think you may be at risk for high blood pressure, or already know that you've got it and are looking for the best way to manage it, this book is for you. Written by bestselling health author Dr. Alan Rubin, it clues you in on everything you need to: Find out if you have high blood pressure or if you're at risk Determine what type you have and how serious it is Understand what causes it Know how it affects your body's organs Work with a doctor to get your pressure down Take charge of your health and add years to your life In plain English, Dr. Rubin explains the role of genetics, sex, age, and ethnicity in high blood pressure. I have to say I am a huge fan of the for "dummies" books. They are easy to read & understand. Always a safe buy if you ask me.

126 over 94

The most terrifying event in my recent life has been my diagnosis of high blood pressure. Because my numbers were so high, my doctor IMMEDIATELY placed me on blood pressure medication as well as strict regimen to deal with the issue. At this point, I want to make this very clear. The diagnosis was not so much a threat to my life as it was my quality of life. In other words, the fear wasn't of keeling over but rather suffering a heart attack, stroke (or brain attack as Dr. Rubin would put it) or some other serious organ failure and in so doing become an immediate burden to those who care about me. Of all the blood pressure books I've read, I picked this one to review owing to its ability to easily convey the important and relevant information to describe both the condition and its available treatments. And fortunately, this condition is one for which treatment is readily available and for which you can even help yourself: 1) In terms of diet...cut out smoking, alcohol, caffeine and excess salt. While some will tell you to follow a strick high pressure or DASH diet I've seen my numbers go down even without completely eliminating animal products from my diet. 2) In terms of physical regimen...work out even if that means a casual half hour stroll once a day to dust off your cobwebs and give your muscles something other to do than just sit around. 3) In terms of life style...understand that life is to be lived and enjoyed so live and enjoy it. Operating with these simple principles in mind, as well as regularly monitoring my blood pressure, I've seen an increase from Oh my God! to Thank you God! Today, I measured my blood pressure at 126 over 94...still above optimum...but at least going in the right direction. So choose life and this book in that order.

Review of high blood pressure for dummies

I am a 78 year old physician being treated for hypertension. I found this book to be quite useful and informative.Because of the knowledge gained from this book I was able to suggest drug treatments to my physician. In addition to the drug treatment, the author recommmends nutritional choices. My blood pressure is now very well controlled on a dietary regime and prescribed medications that cost me ten cents a day. well controlled on a product that costs me ten cents a day.
