Gutek did a wonderful job with these philosopher's work. There is enough information from each pieces to decide whether to read or not read the full volumes from the original phylosophers' work. It is a great book to buy if you want to know how far education and child rearing have come. If you are easily persuaded, becareful of Gutek's tone. However, it is a great conversation book if you're into the great philosophers of our time.

I'll admit that when I first read this book in college (it was a required text) I hated it. But there was so much information in it that I find myself constantly referring to it. I have really come to treasure this book. As an education major in college, this is a great reference book.
