Anyone can write a rant against the state of American democracy today. Anyone can talk trash about politicians, or bemoan the apathy of the electorate, the low turnout, the low attention span, the cynicism. How To Get Stupid White Men... is a guide to getting off one's cynical ass and doing something about it. Over the past six months, William Upski Wimsatt has been working with a group of people who have hitherto engaged in myriad forms of social work and political activism to develop a strategy that will effect positive change on American society through the electoral process. Rather than taking to the streets, rather than "bombing graffitting] the suburbs," Wimsatt and his colleagues plan to "throw the bums out." This book will tell the story of 19 such cases over the past couple of years and outline all the potential races for 2004, describing the tactics to be utilized in an array of contested races across the country by creating coalitions of gay, enviro, Black, Latino and other young groups of voters. The goal is to make this the most useful politically life-changing book any 15-35 year old could read this election year.
if there's anything in the world that could convince people who are disillusioned with the electoral process that voting actually matters, it's this book. Coming from renowned underground and grassroots activists who normally shun the electoral system, now they convince and inspire us to work within the system by telling actual success stories of how people made substantial progressive change by swinging local to national elections. This book is fantastic -- entertaining, enlightening, and most of all, inspiring. It's an incredible lift for anyone who is feeling frustrated, discouraged or depressed about the current political situation. Much better than Prozac. I loved the user friendly format, stories I could relate to, and the humor, especially the wacky mini-interviews. Buy one for yourself and 10 for your friends. It's that good.

It's easy to feel discouraged. Every day we learn something new about how our government has consistently lied to the American public. It's easy to feel powerless. But after reading this book -- and learning the amazing stories of everyday people around this country who stood up for what they believed in -- I swear, you will be inspired. Those in power want to stay in power, and one of their most effective tactics is making the majority of us who want to see regime change feel apathetic. This book is sure-fire antidote. Read it and pass it on.
