At a time of year when borders can appear to be a little bit sparse, winter aconite, also known as Eranthis hyemalis, is a welcome source of joyful color. Early in the month of February, ground-hugging plants begin to display beautiful, golden yellow blossoms that are distinguished by a distinctive green ruff. They have the most striking appearance when grown in large numbers in a natural setting under trees, where their appearance is complemented by snowdrops. Establishing winter aconites might be challenging, but once they are established, they will spread on their own spontaneously. The tuberous perennial known as winter aconite is a member of the buttercup family. Although it is native to Europe, there are other varieties of winter aconite that originate in Asia. Plants will wither and die once they have produced flowers.
