There are around 300 different types of iris blossoms that belong to the genus Iris. These well-known blooms can be purchased in one of two primary varieties: those that originate from rhizomes or those that originate from bulbs. They have singular flowers that are distinguished by the presence of two distinct types of petals known as falls and standards. The lower petals of the flower are formed by the falls, which hang down or fall. The three uppermost petals of the flower are referred to as the standards. Irises can be further subdivided into three distinct categories based on the qualities of their petals: bearded, crested, and beardless. The bearded iris plant has fine hairs that grow along its falls, giving it the appearance of having a beard. A crest, similar to a ridge, can be found on the falls of the flowers of a crested iris. The bearded lack both hair and crests on their faces.
