This book is intended as a guide for horse owners who, faced with ever increasing costs, wish to keep vet's bills to a minimum. Written by a practising veterinary surgeon who is also veterinary... This description may be from another edition of this product.
This is a very helpful book written in 1989 by a British vet for the horse owner emphasizing disease prevention, rather than treatment. Chapters include: Vaccines and how they work; horse's natural defences; avoiding respiratory disease; feeding for health; avoiding parasites; fitness for competition; horse foot care; and mental health. Each chapter includes very helpful information on the physiology of the horse and how it relates to illness. I found the chapter on respiratory illness particularly helpful in trying to understand why my horse has a cough, and what to do about it using proper stable management. It doesn't cover all health topics; for example, I wish he had covered lameness issues affecting joints, but his explanation of hoof and foot health issues is thorough. I gave the book four stars because it hasn't been updated, so it doesn't include recent illness issues such as West Nile Virus. I recommend this book to readers seeking more information on the physiology of what keeps a horse healthy, and horse owners trying to learn proper horsemanship.
