Book Overview

From a corner of the garage set up for routine maintenance to a dream shop housing classic machines, How to Set Up Your Motorcycle Workshop helps motorcyclists make the most of their available space.

Packed with practical advice, author C. G. Masi walks you through designing, building, and equipping the workshop they need--whether they plan to restore, repair, and maintain their own bikes or hope to open a small commercial facility. Masi starts by helping you determine your work space and storage needs and then walks you through the creation of a shop layout that matches your budget. Basics such as providing adequate electrical power, lighting, and heat and air conditioning are all addressed. With the workshop design in place, learn about the must-have and nice-to-have tools to equip the space, and then how to use them.

The book also includes several profiles of real-world workshops, from small garage spaces to purpose-built restoration and race-prep shops, providing ideas and inspiration. Each profile includes a scaled layout of the shop with photos, as well as tips from the owner and designer. A comprehensive resource directory for equipment, tools, computers, battery powered tools, and energy saving tips wraps up the book ensuring you're armed with all the necessary information to tackle the design of your own dream work space.

It all starts here

If you even "think" that you might someday want to set up a motorcycle shop, you need to acquire and read this book. It is so easy to throw a shop together and then start thinking of all the little things that you wish you had done. Things that would have been much easier to do at the beginning. If only you had thought of it then. Well, C. G. Masi HAS thought of it and he has included it in this thourough, well thought out book that will take you through the planning stages and will help you set up a shop that will be versatile, adaptable, and most of all, fully functional. This is a must read for beginners and "old pros" alike.

A Good Start

Although I have been around motorcycles for almost 40 years, I never really had an organized place to work in. Having recently aquired a small garage, How to Set Up Your Motorcycle Workshop had some great ideas about organization, logical placement of tools, workbench, etc, to save time and energy. I also liked the chapter devoted to lighting, something definitely lacking in a lot of shops I have been in. All in all it will get you off to a good start, the rest is up to you!

a most complete manual

This book shows, not only how to set up a small hobby shop (my goal), but also a medium to large shop for the professional. The need for maximum utilization of space as well as work flow are covered in depth. Anyone wanting an efficient and enjoyable shop will want this book.

Full of great ideas and sound advice.

Like D. Conyer, I don't understand the point of the review based on color vs b & w photographs. This book delivers exactly what the title promises, and includes advice for all levels of bike mechanics and all sizes of available work space. As someone who is limited to "his half of the garage", I appreciate this approach. Highly recommended!

Pictures Aren't The Important Part of This Book

This book contains good, detailed information from an expert mechanic on setting up your bike shop. It's not an "overview," it's a detailed guide. I know because I recently set up a commercial shop using this book. The sections on lighting and shop layout gave me a much better sense of how much space I needed. Turns out I needed less than I thought, so that saved me considerable $$$. Rating this book one star because you didn't get color pictures of screwdrivers and shop layouts is ridiculous. If you want color pictures, buy Life magazine. If you want to learn how to set up a motorcycle shop the right way, buy this book.
