All I wanted was to keep the car running, and to never make it home because I didn't think I could. I wanted him and I to drive for days, maybe weeks. The engine would eventually break down, of course, perhaps somewhere in rural Eastern Europe. We'd get jobs working the fields, save enough to buy us each a bicycle, and then pedal all the way to Moscow. We would sail down the Volga on clandestine rafts, drift away the Caspian Sea, wash ashore some frightening, foreign beach and waste our years away being alive, carelessly existing in a boundless frame of mind. And we'd hopefully regret nothing when the sun eventually set over the last of days, fiery, glaring in a technicolour frame.
