In this book, Schurmann does an excellent job of explaining Chinese Communist ideology, as well as elucidating just how China was organized. Unfortunately, Schurmann's work is no longer a piece of analytical reporting, but a piece of history (since the work is over 30 years old). The only serious flaw in this well-researched, scholarly work is how slow the book reads. Schurmann often spends 20 pages explaining a single 'contradiction'' (that is, a thesis and an antithesis of Maoist dialectic). But... he does so very well.
