Gardening is now the favorite leisure pastime in America. Homeowners are realizing the health benefits derived from gardening and the increase in their home's property value. The Illinois Gardener's Guide: Revised Edition is written by the popular gardening expert James Fizzell. It contains easy-to-use advice on the top landscape plant choices (more than 190 entries) for Illinois. It also recommends specific varieties, and provides advice on how to plant, how to grow and how to care for Illinois' best plants. It is a must read for every Illinois gardener.
I just love this book. It has great information and beautiful pictures. I keep it on my end table all the time. I bought the book because my son-in-law has the Tennessee version and I thought that one was very well done. I actually bought two of these books, one for my mother-in-law for Mother's Day and one for me!
Everything an Illinois gardener needs to know

This book is a very thorough reference guide about gardening in Illinois. There's a lot of information here about different types of plants, how and when to plant them, and tips on how to care for them. As a novice gardener, I wish there was a bit more information on how to go about planning and designing a garden, but perhaps I need to get an even more basic book like "Gardening for Dummies!" I'm sure this book will be even more useful to me down the line once I'm a bit more knowledgeable about gardening.
Handy Reference

This is a handy reference for Illinois gardeners with quite a bit of inside info - what will really grow here and what won't -and I often refer to it. The information on specific varieties could be a little more meaty but overall this is well worth the price. I bought a copy of the first edition of this book and it wasn't very good. If you did also you should give Fizzell a second chance - this revised edition is much better.

An easy to use reference book which tells the Illinois gardner what to plant, where to plant, and when to prune. It's a very useful handbook for novice and not-so-novice midwest gardners.
