Fox News host and busy mother of eight E. D. Hill offers the antidote to permissive parenting by giving parents permission to be in charge. Instructional and conversational, I'm Not Your Friend, I'm Your Parent challenges parents to reclaim their roles, make the hard decisions, and put their children's characters and well-being ahead of peer pressue and social status. With entertaining stories from her own family and those of others she has encountered in her profession as a journalist, E. D. tackles parental challenges: Manners: thank you and other common courtesies Discipline: tantrums and time-outs Money: chores and allowances Sportsmanship: fair vs. foul Clothing: fashion and dress codes Teenagers: structure and consequences Includes a special chapter on Driving, Dating, and other Death-Defying Feats along with contracts for use with teens
I loved this books. It's jam-packed with practical tips, common sense advise, and wonderful quotes. I agree with another reviewer: it's time more parents learn how to be parents! Kudos to Ms. Hill for writing a book with such a great message and hope for parents.

If you are thinking about starting a family or all ready started, it's never too late to learn how to parent the right way. Yes, in this time of kids being spoiled rotten, it's no wonder why kids now days disrespect authority, this is happening because too many parents are " Friends " with their kids instead of being their parents. This is a must read for the next generation coming up.

A Must Read For Parents

Anyone who is a parent of children from toddlers to teens should read this book. It is full of solid advice on a wide range of topics including: manners, discipline, sportsmanship, dress code, and more. The author is the mother of eight and a TV news journalist. Her children cover a wide range of ages. She offers practical suggestions for instilling boundaries and good behavior. The section on manners alone would be plenty of reason to buy several copies of this and give it as gifts to parents. There is lots of great stuff beyond that as well. One part that I think is particularly good is the one on allowances. Not only does Ms. Hill help parents with good ideas on money issues, she also reveals some excellent resources that will help with tracking and paying out allowances based upon completed chores, etc. Two other particularly outstanding suggestions include model contracts for home rules and driving. This is a great book for any parent. Buy it, read it, and use her ideas!

I purchased this book so I could give it to parents. I am a great grandparent, very interested in young families. Oh, how I wish I had had this available 45 years ago. It was such an interesting read as well as very fundamental. I found myself staying up till very late at night reading because I had to see what she had to say next. I feel that this is one of the 21st century problems with families. Parents are letting the children run the family because they want to be their friends. I recommend this book to every parent with children.
