From the years of slavery through the years of civil rights, images of black people have taken many forms. Some of these images were positive and some negative and stereotypical. Together they help us see and measure the history of racial attitudes in America, and make up the growing field of what is called Black Collectibles. These collectibles help to chronicle an important aspect of American history. Hundreds of these items are gathered together for Images in Black: 300 Years of Black Collectibles, and are illustrated in full color. The text helps the reader understand the history, and the price guide makes the volume useful for evaluating the market in black collectibles.
Images In Black, Sometimes disturbing look at history!

Schiffer publications release entitled, Images In Black: 150 Years of Black Collectibles is very well done, and complete. It features the gamut from salt and pepper shakers, to toys, depicting persons of African Descent. Most disturbing of these is a Halloween costume called, "The N..... Outfit". For those looking to collect Black Memorabilia, this is an excellent title to own! I recommend it! Warning, however, our past was not politically correct, so no feelings were spared when it came to the depiction of black Americans!
Gorgeous, full-color book with a wealth of information, pics

I'd say this was a must for those interested in Black collectibles. It has everything I look for in a good collector's book - a wealth of full-color photos on every page, all of decent size and many even larger than one would expect. The variety of items represented covers the range from toys, games, books and banks to advertising, music, Golliwoggs, cards, flat art, household items, clocks, watches and more. There is a basic, if not overly detailed, price guide and a fair amount of historical information. Unless the reader is already an expert in the history and value of Black collectibles, I'd say there will be plenty of new information here. It was a delight just looking through this one- although, as expected, some of the collectibles may be seen as offensive to contemporary eyes (or one would hope), representing a view of Black Americans that was taken for granted when the items were made.
