Poetry's hip, poetry's hot, and poetry's a blast with this cool, contemporary guide created in the same entertaining style as the popular In Print Kids instinctively love poetry--its rhythm, its rhymes, and its playful transformation of ordinary language. And these days, such cutting-edge, youthful forms as rap, hip-hop, and slams have made poetry more relevant than ever. With its fun facts, exciting writing activities, and words of encouragement from a respected professional, Immersed in Verse nurtures the nascent poet in every child. Best of all, these awe-inspiring ideas have nothing in common with blah school assignments. Instead, youngsters rearrange their favorite (or least favorite) poems; start their own poetry workshop; present open mike night in the basement; and record their friends reciting. Along the way, they'll open more than a few poet's toolboxes. They'll explore the wonderful world of words and learn about attitude, equipment, techniques (including metaphors be with you), different styles of verse, revising your writing, getting published, and performing. Allan Wolf has served as the educational director for the national touring company Poetry Alive His books include The Blood-Hungry Spleen and Other Poems about Our Parts and New Found Land, He lives in North Carolina with his wife and three children.A Selection of the Children's Book of the Month Club.
I learned of Mr. Wolf's book "Immersed In Verse" at a North Carolina BookFest. As a late-budding poet who is interested in writing children's poetry, I decided to purchase the book. After two hours of reading it at the kitchen table, I found this little book was the most worthwhile poetry workshop I had ever attended! This book is NOT just for young readers, although every elementary educator who wants to instill a love of poetry in their students should read it cover to cover. But there are also wonderful tips and techniques for the adult amateur poet on how to get creative, to find ideas for poetry around you, and an excellent reminder review of the main components of good poetry. This is one of the "jewels" among the millions of average "how to" book titles out there.

Though I thought my kids might hate the presentation, I took them to see Mr. Wolf at the Columbia (SC) Museum of Art. Within moments they were completely captured by the presentation which featured poetry from this book, others by the author, and much more. We immediately bought a copy and have since purchased many as gifts such as for cousins at Christmas. All kinds of toys scattered under the tree and guess what they almost would not put down--Immersed in Verse. It's a fun book that also teaches an awful lot about poetry--I use it with a variety of students (from high school to elementary, from advanced English speakers to newer immigrants), not to mention the artwork is riveting. It's among my top 10 list of books ever; I recommend it whole-heartedly and only hope Mr. Wolf writes more...

Helping your home school student find her inner poet

When we just kept checking the same book out of library again and again and again, I decided Immersed in Verse would make a great Christmas present for my twelve-year-old daughter. This book helps kids become aware of the beauty of words and introduces them to different forms of poetry. I don't have to coerce my daughter to try her hand at writing her own poetry. Inspired by this book, she does this on her own, holing up on top of the bunk bed for hours at a time. We highly recommend it!
