Valeriana MacPherson is determined to care for the children of her late sister, despite her disapproval of their cigar-smoking, whiskey-drinking rake of a father. For his part, Ian Patterson is about... This description may be from another edition of this product.
Ian has had to put up with an awful lot over the years- a materialistic, unfaithful wife, Lily, and a domineering father-in-law, now after the sad death of his wife Ian is hoping to be able to move on, protecting his 4 children whom he loves very much and start over. But other plans are made when it is decided that his sister-in-law, Valeriana (Ana), will come and live with him and the children to help out. At first Ian is irritated but over time he comes to respect and adventually care for Ana. Ana, who is thought of as the plain Jane in the family has accepted that fact that she will always be the spinister daughter taking care of her parents, decides that she wants more out of life. Ian and Ana are forced into marriage when her father becomes possessive of Ana's attention and accuses her of wonton behavior with Ian. Ian proposes to protect Ana's reputation. Little do they know it will become a love they have both been craving. It was a nice break from other books I have been reading. My first JB- I will read more of hers if I can find them.

Ms. Bieber's historical voice is clear and strong in this wonderful book. She has created three-dimensional characters that literally shine from the pages. Despite their seemingly at-odds character flaws, Ian and Ana embark on their journey together, bringing the reader with them. And this is one reader who rooted for them the whole way.I highly recommend this book and am eagerly anticipating Ms. Bieber's next endeavor!
Wonderfully entertaining!

Valeriana "Ana" MacPherson comes to care for her deceased sister's children, despite the fact -- or actually because of the fact -- their father is a reprobate. But the longer she remains in Ian Patterson's company, the more she questions what she thinks she knows.Ian finds is sister-in-law annoying, self-righteous and prissy . . . and conversely, he finds her to be the most intriguing woman he's ever met, with a brain every bit as big as the enormous heart that heaps love and affection on his children. And it's that heart that Ian sets out to win. Ana might think the marriage he's proposed is a marriage-of-convenience, but with time and patience Ian is sure he can convince her that their marriage is based on something more, something more like love!Janet Bieber weaves another historical tale that will weave its way into your heart and stay with you for a long time to come.
