The second book in the "Farthing Wood" series. In the depths of winter, with snow thick on the ground, Badger lies alone and injured. No one knows where he is, and the icy cold is tightening its grip... This description may be from another edition of this product.
This second novel in the "Farthing Wood" series offers further character developments for a select few, making it a much more engaging read. It bring the series a little closer to adult reading, rather than young adult, and Dann's ability to summon empathy for - let's not forget! - a bunch of animals is astounding. Particularly the elderly badger is very relatable, as this is really his story, and we also start to feel more strongly the bond that holds the friends together against any adversity. This sounds like an adult interpretation of what is, on the surface, a children's tale, but there is much here for adult to enjoy, not just someone like me who reads the series for the sake of nostalgia! The plight of the animals, here the natural but no-less-deadly threat of starvation and cold, draws out the best and worst of the creatures of White Deer Park. A wonderful read - but again if you didn't like the first book, or weren't enthralled by these or the animated series as a youth, you may find the story lacking compared to novels written purposefully for adults.
