Officially, a "small town" is a community with less than 1000 residents, and the pictures in this almost-pocket-size collection clearly fit that definition. The author, in his introduction, assures us that such communities are still alive and flourishing despite the doomsters and nay-sayers who regularly proclaim their imminent extinction. And apparently he has found quite a few if them to bolster his opinion. His photos and captions are mostly of the wry variety ("...if, in the evening, you can hear a dog bark two blocks away--and know whose dog it is," "...if a look at the waterworks is an essential part of the tour," "...if there's not much to see, but what you overhear makes up for it"), yet somehow telling, and if you find yourself in a place that fits his descriptions, I suspect you can be pretty sure you're in a classic small town.
Lots of knowing laughs

Very funny, charming pictures and captions about what defines small towns today. If you've lived it one or even passed through, you'll recognize a lot here.
