Eleven years have passed since Jane Savoie's That Winning Feeling! Program Your Mind for Peak Performance was published. Now in its ninth printing, and translated into several languages, it was the first book to recognize the importance of training the mind and shaping attitude in order to achieve higher levels of riding skill than ever before imagined. Riders in all disciplines, from the English specialties such as dressage and jumping, to Western events like reining and cutting, soon discovered that the techniques Jane described could be used to refine their riding, and as an unexpected bonus, improve the quality of their lives. In response to the many readers who said they were hungry for more information, Jane is presenting It's Not Just About the Ribbons, a stimulating demonstration of new tools and innovative ideas for self-improvement. Once again, she shares the very concepts she has used, not only to help herself deal with challenges, but her students -- who range from Olympic Games' contenders to more intermediate riders -- as well. It includes a wealth of ideas to help you deal with your "mental monsters" including: staying motivated; anchoring positive emotions; censoring your speech; controlling your dominant thoughts; reprogramming your "mental computer" through visualization and self-talk; and giving yourself an "attitude adjustment" -- to list just a few. There is also an important chapter on how to cope with fear, complete with many practical suggestions and exercises -- illustrated with photos and drawings -- on how to deal with this major, pervasive problem in riding. The book also individually highlights eleven personality traits that hold riders back from fully enjoying their sport (and their lives) -- traits such as insecurity, frustration, impatience, tension, doubt, arrogance, moodiness, and pessimism. In wonderfully useful sections interspersed throughout the book, Jane examines these negative emotions and tells you how to overcome them -- turning distraction into concentration, for example -- by using strategies that transform an encumbering feeling into a positive characteristic advantage. Full of real-life stories -- shining examples of the success of Jane's methods of dealing with challenges -- this book is essential for everyone who is passionate about horses, but may be struggling, at some level or other, with negative emotions and frustration from slow development of riding skills. All readers will find that they can make changes more easily and even more playfully, while better enjoying every moment spent with their horses. Book jacket.
This was the first of the three books I ordered that I read. Couldn't wait to get it and did not put it down once started. Tons of insight on how to approach training and riding when you don't have a lot of money to spend for lessons and personnel trainers. Very useful on how to stay motivated, how to use your inner self to conquer doubts, fears, and build confidence. The results are immediate when you choose to apply what Jane recommends. Very easy reading and any one can do this.
An extremely helpful book for "bats in the attic"

Although I have not owned this book for a great deal of time, already it has become a firm favourite. Re "bats in the attic" what I mean is when that little voice inside us keeps telling us, watch out, this horse may shy and you will be off, or watch this horse it is a very dodgy ride, today it's too windy/rainy/cold,or even, I cannot possibly ride my horse outside on the roadside, etc, etc. If you have any problem with being absolutely confident or are being overly nervous, then this book is definitely for you. I found that when I was younger, I didn't even think of any consequences to riding a horse - it was such a tremendous feeling - and I went everywhere possible with my horse. As you grow older, you start to think what MIGHT happen (or at least I did). This is where this book again comes in to help. It is so very positive and also helps with other areas of one's life. I cannot recommend this book highly enough to anyone having problems with nerves, confidence, courage or determination.
Truly, Truly Awesome!

I very, very seldom give a book 5 stars, but I really and truly loved this book. Everything about it is encouraging and uplifting - it's even better than That Winning Feeling, Savoie's previous book on this topic. As someone who wrestles with focus, patience, and avoiding distractions when I ride, I was totally impressed with Jane Savoie's simple approach to improving one's arsenal of visualization and positive-thinking techniques. Simply by training your mind, you can hugely improve your performance and your enjoyment of riding. And these techniques are totally applicable to all endeavours in life. The ideas are not new, but have seldom been expressed so kindly and so clearly, particularly with respect to horses. As a bonus, the hardcover edition of this book is also very beautiful, with lovely photos, illustrations and layout. Highly recommended!!
