Maya Straus was born to Jewish parents in Zweibrucken, Germany, and even though she didn't follow Judaism, she feared for her life in 1938 when Nazi leaders began arresting Jews. Maya and her husband, Gunter's' escape ultimately led them to Jacob's Valley, Virginia. After arriving in Jacob's Valley, they had to deal with hostility and hatred because of the breakout of World War II and the anti-German sentiment before being accepted.
