In Lucy Hawking?s debut novel, William Gadget appears to have it all?a high-profile, not to mention high-pressure, career as a London banker, a pricey Notting Hill flat, enough money to keep himself... This description may be from another edition of this product.
Please remember--this is a first novel. If you insist on Marquez-like perfection, then pass on this one. But with a little patience, you will see the talent that brought this author to publication--a flair for painting the scene, for characterization, and above all, wry humor. Her offbeat ensemble of characters is reminiscent of 1990's TV sitcoms, but with some depth of feeling, no cheap shots. As an over-50 reader who once tried her hand at the fiction game, this is an entertaining diversion from the more serious fiction I now pursue. Yes, her plot structure could use some work. But her dialog rings true, her character motivations are valid, and she avoids many of the novice pitfalls seen in genre fiction. If this sounds like damning with faint praise, it is not intended to be. I thoroughly enjoyed Jaded, and will be actively looking forward to finding Run For Your Life, her second foray into literary endevours. And yes, she is Stephen Hawking's--the great physicist--daughter.
Chick-lit with a twist

I picked up this book last year in London while I was browsing at a small bookstore. The tittle caught my attention and I started reading the book on the plane home. I was immeditately transported back to london into a world I had not visited but would have have loved to. The book is thrilling and exciting. The plot keeps you guessing and the characters bring you right in. Agreat read, a lot of fun. I cannot wait for Lucy Hawkings's next book.
