A thorough introduction to the Java programming language and the creation of applets and applications for the Internet. It explores advanced Java techniques, multimedia delivery and database connectivity. The enclosed CD-ROM features the Sun Java Development Kit and source code from the book.
Great book that covers the ins-and-outs Java programming.

I loved the pace and perspective that the authors brought to learning Java. Detailed, well thought out and often humourous. I wish more programming books were as good as this one. I especially like the detailed coverage of Sun's documentation. This book teaches you how to program Java applets and applications, then serves as a comprehensive API reference -- best of both worlds!
seems to focus on the internet more than anything

This is a great book!!! It explains things much more in-depth than most books I have read about Java. The problem is the authors focus on the web publishing part of Java too much. So much that they just skip over some important things that one with an intermediate level of Java needs to know.
