The problems encountered by a beginning Java programmer are many--and mostly minor. The problems you encounter as an experienced Java programmer are far fewer--and far more serious. Java Programming 10-Minute Solutions provides direct solutions to the thorny problems you're most likely to run up against in your work. Especially when a project entails new techniques or draws you into a realm outside your immediate expertise, potential headaches abound. With this book, a veteran Java programmer saves you both aggravation and--just as important--time. Here are some of the solutions you'll find inside: Parsing XML using SAX and DOM, and using XSLT to transform XML to HTML Java file I/O: copying and deleting entire directories Using Java search algorithms Thread management Leveraging Java Web Services support in SOAP, XML-RPC, and XML over HTTP Low-level JDBC programming Using servlets and JSPs (including struts) for web applications Using Enterprise JavaBeans (EJBs) container managed persistence Generating EJB classes with ant and XDocolet Using JUnit for unit testing Modeled after the straightforward Q&A approach of the DevX website, these in-depth, code-intensive solutions help you past obstacles right now and ultimately make you a smarter, more effective programmer.
60 solutions in 300 pages. Thickness: 1/2" I have several thick books that explain Java and J2EE. This book does a better job in explaining concepts and provides downloadable code. As the back cover says, "The problems you encounter as an experienced Java programmer are far fewer - and far more serious." Mr. Watson needs to come up with Edition 2 for developments that happened since Jan, 2004.

This is a great book for someone who needs to find solutions to problems quickly. However, don't consider buying this book unless you have a good knowledge of Java to begin with. I specifically worked through all of the solutions in the File I/O, String Handling, XML Processing, Distributed Programming Using XML, Searching and Sorting, Threads, JDBC Database Access, and Ant, JUnit, and XDoclet sections. All of these sections provided me with good information about topics needed while working on a recent project. All of the code worked as advertised. You wouldn't believe how often I run into code that doesn't work. Mark did a great job telling me how to reuse code in other applications. The solutions actually did take around 10 minutes each to read. Too often I've found that 10 minutes often means a day or more. I found the coverage of topics was great. I especially found the coverage of search techniques helpful. In short, I got a lot more out of this book that I have some other books on the market. I think Mark did a great job.
