I first read this story in a Readers Digest condensed version about 15 years ago. Since then, it has been my all time favorite book. I think I have read it at least 15 times over the years. It's one of those stories that reminds you what life is really about and how the hard times can shape the good times and vice versa. Highly recommended for the 'old country at heart' reader.
Goes to show human nature does not change with time.

This book was my grandmothers and i received it when she died so i feel that i was supposed to read it. The main character's life in the book is almost a mirrored reflection of my own. In my eyes it proves that human nature does not change with time.
