Helene comes upon an old diary. It belongs to a Caribbean girl who turned to writing as an escape from her traumatic marriage to a polygamous husband. Juletane met her husband in France and moved to Senegal where she found herself sharing her life with two other wives.
I originally had to read this book for a class and approached it as "required reading". However, as soon as I began reading it, I couldn't put it down- I read it in one sitting! This was the first book that made me cry. I felt compassion for the characters Juletane and Helene. Vierya-Warner made the reader feel the isolation and despair that linked their stories together. This is one of my favorite books.
