Katherine Mansfield

Katherine Mansfield (the writing name of Kathleen Mansfield Beauchamp) was born in Wellington, New Zealand, on 14 October 1888. She died at Fontainebleau, France, on 9 January 1923.

During her brief career she profoundly altered the shape and status of the short story. This study analyses her technique and traces back the material for all her finest stories to its origins in her place of birth. She is one of the very few writers from the British Commonwealth who have made a significant contribution to the general current of English literature.

Dr Ian A. Gordon, CBE was Professor of English at the University of Wellington. He was educated at the University of Edinburgh, where he was for some years on the staff of Sir Herbert Grierson. He is the author of books on several topics, including English prose technique, Eighteenth Century and Renaissance poetry, an edition of John Galt, and a history of English prose. He is a well-known editor, reviewer, and broadcaster in New Zealand. The valuable bibliography he compiled for this essay includes the more important articles in periodicals relating to Katherine Mansfield's work.
