A retired group of legendary mercenaries get the band back together for one last impossible mission in this award-winning debut epic fantasy. Fantastic, funny, ferocious. -- Sam Sykes Clay Cooper and his band were once the best of the best, the most feared and renowned crew of mercenaries this side of the Heartwyld. Their glory days long past, the mercs have grown apart and grown old, fat, drunk, or a combination of the three. Then an ex-bandmate turns up at Clay's door with a plea for help -- the kind of mission that only the very brave or the very stupid would sign up for. It's time to get the band back together.
It's set up like a 90s fantasy with humor middle aged men would really enjoy but in a good way. It has a ton of high fantasy creatures, magic, and a few scifi elements. Yes, the man on the cover with the long white beard is a wizard. There's even LGBT representation.

Got the book and didn't put it down until I finished it.
One of the best books I've ever read!

When I was younger I was a huge fan of fantasy but as I've gotten older I've mainly only read horror. My girlfriend picked this up for me one day on a whim and I thought it'd be worth a try. This book has absolutely everything! The characters all feel real and are amazingly written. All of the characters are hysterical and the humor that comes from the retired heroes pulling muscles from not stretching before a fight never gets old. Eames introduces us to a new fantasy world but not one that is overwhelming. I at no point felt confused as to what was happening as Eames breaks things down to the reader as he introduces them. The final act of the book is genuinely some of the best reading I've had in years and left me tears in my eyes. Cannot understate just how amazing of a book this is. If you like fantasy, D&D or just need a good new read, pick this one up!
Can't wait for more!

10000/10!
I love this book, it took me out of a huge reading drought (I usually prefer more low-stakes/cozy fantasy readings). The plot has a great pace without feeling too rushed and it's filled to the brim with heart, humor, and action.
I genuinely love this series and I can't wait to see more of it in the future!
Witty banter. Gritty action.

One of my favorites. Perfectly encapsulates being an aging legend in a world of young go-hards.
If you want a a fun ride, a good laugh, read this!

I've never had so much fun reading a book in my life. I couldn't put it down; to anyone who has ever played Dungeons and Dragons, or is curious to know what the players get up to... this. Just, EVERYTHING that happens, and the hilarious banter. Man, i love this book!
