This book is a compilation of Moses King's New York Guides initially published around the turn of the century. What makes his books so remarkable--which, by the way, can be downloaded for free on Google Books--is the 3-D aspect of New York City. Where other guidebooks such as Baedeker, or Murray, or Black, give directions, descriptions and 2-D maps of the past, the King guidebooks are 90% photographs and bird's-eye view renderings of the city on which the book focuses. In this case, it is New York and Brooklyn of 1896-1915, and this book is a must-buy for anyone interested in New York history, and in Mrs Astor's 400 and Edith Wharton's novels, and for historians and writers.
