Knowlton Landing: A History of Family and Place

Knowlton Landing, situated on Sargent's Bay of Lake Memphremagog, has long been a place for people to enjoy the beauty of the lake and mountains nearby, including the Owl's Head. Knowlton Maplehurst Farm is at the heart of the Landing. It was established in 1821 and had been in continuous operation by the Knowlton family until 2019. The area is rich in history as a leg in a shortened route from Boston to Montreal established in 1824. The Knowlton family were farmers as well as operating a post office, general store, ferry landing, and public house. Each generation has dealt with the challenges of the time with ingenuity and resourcefulness shifting the focus of the farm and selling vegetables, ice, and maple syrup to the summer residents. Eight generations of Knowltons have called the Landing home balancing the operation of a working farm in the middle of a tourist destination. The buildings and farm changes with every year, but the red brick building built and the family cemetery are enduring reminders of Levi Knowlton and the Knowlton family.
