In the spring semester of 1957, I was a student at Utah State University and was still undecided as to my vocation in life. I had majored in Agriculture at Arkansas Tech, and been in Forestry and Range Management at Utah State, but still was not sure what I wanted to do with my life. The move to Utah from Arkansas was exciting, although I had traveled in the west before I had never lived there. I liked Utah, with its wide-open spaces, natural beauty, hunting, mountains, skiing, hiking; and the people I met. I especially liked the ranchers with whom I had a kinship. The move west was not without some personal cost, as I left behind family, friends, and someone special in the hills of Arkansas. One day I was sitting in the Student Union doing more daydreaming than studying, the wonders of the west had made serious study difficult. Bob a friend of mine came by and sat down beside me and said, "Jones, let's go to Alaska!" Well, that stimulated the dreaming much more than the studying. My answer was, "Ok!"
