Any boy or girl who loves the idea of a lake, with a cottage and pier and boat complete with fishing poles will love this book. The mystery of the island in the middle of the lake is frosting. While you're enjoying living alongside Kyle as he fishes and digs worms and lazes in the sun and plays cards and swims and fishes some more, you'll also get to know his family, and his odd older neighbor Tom. The absent dad and the threat of losing the cottage make for tension but Kyle figures out how to be a decent brother and how to respect people whose motivations may not be self-evident. Warm and memorable.

Young readers should love the chance to join Kyle and his family in Michigan for this summer of change. It's clear that Sally Derby knows her setting inside and out, and she peoples it with a family who are as real as the setting - struggling, flawed, loving, its members growing together and separately. The experience is enhanced by Derby's lyrical writing style and by the gentle wisdom she imparts to readers as she tells her story. Definitely a winner!
