Book Overview

In this inspirational and unflinchingly honest memoir, acclaimed author Reyna Grande describes her childhood torn between the United States and Mexico, and shines a light on the experiences, fears, and hopes of those who choose to make the harrowing journey across the border.

Reyna Grande vividly brings to life her tumultuous early years in this "compelling...unvarnished, resonant" (BookPage) story of a childhood spent torn between two parents and two countries. As her parents make the dangerous trek across the Mexican border to "El Otro Lado" (The Other Side) in pursuit of the American dream, Reyna and her siblings are forced into the already overburdened household of their stern grandmother. When their mother at last returns, Reyna prepares for her own journey to "El Otro Lado" to live with the man who has haunted her imagination for years, her long-absent father.

Funny, heartbreaking, and lyrical, The Distance Between Us poignantly captures the confusion and contradictions of childhood, reminding us that the joys and sorrows we experience are imprinted on the heart forever, calling out to us of those places we first called home.

Also available in Spanish as La distancia entre nosotros.

A moving read, definitely recommended.

A story that is reality for millions but rarely told. We hear about the immigrants coming into the US. Yet, we rarely see the toll for the families left behind. The Distance Between Us helps shine a light on that silent pain. Reyna Grande captures the heartbreak, hopes, and aspirations of those living in the shadows. She shows the emotional and psychological impact on the children caught in the middle. One cannot help but feel the heartbreak of being shuffled between relatives who may not want you, the crushing disappointment that comes when meeting a parent doesn't live up to your expectations, and the string of being left behind all over again. Once across the border, the challenges don't stop for Grande. Living as an undocumented immigrant brings a new set of obstacles for Grande. Yet, these makes the moments of triumph (however small) that much sweeter. This book is a reminder of how hopeful and determined people can be in search of a better life. To me, that is the heart of this book. The story is both inspiring and aspirational. It reflects the rough, real-life journey that millions take every year in search of a better life. My only complaint is with the occasional Spanglish that Grande peppers in her writing. While it adds authenticity, some phrases could have used help in understanding. Grande does this in some parts but not in others. Still, that's a small critique to the nature of this book. 5/5.

Amazing memoir

I loved this book. It starts with Grande living in a difficult situation in Mexico after her parents have left for the US (the "other side"). Then, she is able to cross the border and has to adapt to a new country and a new language. On top of that, she has to deal with some familial struggles. The book doesn't really cover the border crossing at all. But the description of coming to the US, learning English, and starting a new life here was very compelling. The story was very inspiring and I think it's also a good book for teenagers, especially immigrants or those from difficult backgrounds.

A Memoir

A true and heart wrenching story about abuse, neglect, determination and dreams of an immigrant from Mexico. A very good read that will connect you with the author.
