William Mayne is a very sensitive, thoughtful and imaginative author of children's books. He has put together a story of two pigs, Boark and Sowk, who have great ambitions, equalled only by their great love for themselves and each other. These two decide to dig up truffles and sell them at the market, in order to buy a horse and carriage, complete with coachman and finery. Unfortunately, some piggish character traits put a crimp in their plans. The weird aspect of this book is the stream-of-consciousness narration (think Virginia Woolf's MRS. DALLOWAY). If that weren't strange enough, the pigs don't think in the English language -- they think in Piglish. I found this book VERY challenging to read aloud. At one point, midway, I asked my four year-old son if he understood. The answer was a very enthusiastic, "no, but it's funny -- keep reading!" Well, my four year-old certainly enjoyed this book. And, once you think about it, there's certainly nothing wrong with exposing little ones to different narrative styles and trying to get them to imagine something other than their own conscious experience.
