Lameness, one of the most common and most troublesome of all equine ailments, remains the primary reason why horses are unable to fulfill their potential and their riders' and trainers' expectations. More preparation time is lost, more competitions are missed, and more careers are prematurely ended because of lameness than any other condition. This book analyzes the causes, diagnoses, and management of the myriad causes of lameness: --Defining and identifying the lame leg; spotting gait abnormalities and non-muscular causes; physical examinations and evaluations; diagnostic tools and other tests; the role of the veterinarian and farrier in pre-purchase examinations. --Physical therapies; the applicability of rest, medications, and other veterinary procedures. --Hoof conformation and shoeing options. --Joint, bone, muscle, and tendon and ligament problems. --Neurological, dermatological, and developmental orthopedic causes of lameness. --Treatment of specific conditions to the foot, pastern and fetlock, cannon and splint bones, knee, upper foreleg, hock, upper hind leg, and back. No other book covers this vital subject in such a comprehensive and understandable fashion. For that reason, no other book deserves a more prominent place on the shelf of anyone who owns, trains, rides, or drives horses.
Excellent book with heaps and heaps of info on lameness and how to treat the problems. Has charts in it as well for you to score your own horses lameness. Has other health complications listed that can cause lameness and syptoms of lameness. I refer to it often. Layed out in section eg: hoof, lower leg, upper leg etc etc so you can go straight to the chapter you wish to look at. Well set out and easy to read. I highly recommend it!

The book "Lameness: Recognizing and Treating the Horse's Most Common Ailment", is a well-written and informative book. The knowledge presented is accessible to the average horse person, and very extensive, covering just about every possible cause of equine lameness in the legs, hooves, and other parts of a horse's anatomy. The book also covers methods of identifying different types of lameness, recognizing gait abnormalities, managing diseases, treating wounds, hoof care, shoeing, and available therapies, medications, and veterinary care. Although as yet, I have not read this book completely - it has 1022 pages, it is stuffed full of information. It not only covers lameness, but much more besides and is an absolute reference work on the horses legs, feet and limbs in general. The pictures are great and very useful if you are studying. I also liked the way there is a description of the "ailment", diagnosis followed by treatment and prevention, plus prognosis. There are chapters on physical therapies, medications and veterinary procedures. I would have just loved this book in my student days as there is so much detail to study. The chapter on hoof conformation and shoeing options is invaluable. It is very readable and much more enjoyable than other well-known books on the matter which are far too technical. Every rider should purchase, beg, borrow or steal a copy. Phenominal reading.Adams' Lameness in Horses

This is a great book! Not only does it give you info on lameness but it also gives you common knowledge, like; where to give shots. I am ordering my own copy after looking at my mom's. It goes into great detail in scientific terms but explains them in an easy to understand way. Every horse owner should own a copy! It is also very well setup so things are easy to find. The pictures are great, showing cross sections of feet and joints.
