If you are interested in the history and philosophy of western science, then buy this book. This is a slim volume of 245 pages, and as such cannot cover the entire scope of science history in any great detail. It does, however, present an excellent discussion of the emergence of the traditions of scientific thought. The coverage of science in religious cultures, and the conflicts of ideology in that context are very well brought out. The book does not attempt to be comprehensive, but rather is selective in its coverage, with the greatest deficiency being the very limited coverage of twentieth century science. None-the-less, this is an excellent book that elucidates the development of scientific thought and philosophy from its earliest beginnings to our present rigorous methodology.
