The story starts with Josiah wondering why he bought Langley's Choice, and why he is engaged to marry the neighbor's eldest daughter, Caroline. He is a gentleman from England. This wild country is very far from family and upbringing, and his wife-to-be has made such an inappropriate choice for her state in life that if she survives, is she a worthy candidate for marriage? The growth of these characters leaves you with hope. The accurately historical background is eyeopening. I have bought this book for friends.
Good for Jane Austen fans

This isn't as good as her other books, but it's a nice, gentle book that moves like a Jane Austen novel. It would make a good gift for your mom or aunt, especially if she likes history, because there are a lot of historical details about how they did stuff in colonial Maryland.
