Another Masterpiece from Wolfe

Gene Wolfe is quite possibly the best author I have ever read, SFF and otherwise. His books demand effort and concentration, it’s true, but the thoughtful reader will be well rewarded. Latro in the Mist is at once thrilling, infuriating, tragic, and above all memorable. I would rank the Latro stories as Wolfe’s second best novel length exploration of character, after the Book of the New Sun. The plot is even more amorphous than the Sun stories, but that here is the point. It is actually very interesting to read this series just before or after New Sun, as the main character in those books has a perfect memory and the main character in Latro has a one-day long memory only. This difference massively changes Wolfe’s tone and delivery. All in all, an excellent series for all Wolfe fans and anyone interested in thoughtful fantasy literature.
