This book contains a series of nine nation-state based accounts of leisure policy, and seeks to develop in its editorial introduction and conclusion, an analysis of major national and transnational influences and trends in leisure policy. While six chapters cover countries in the European Community (Britain, France, Germany, Greece, Netherlands and Spain), there are also chapters on Sweden, Poland and the former Soviet Union. Policy change in each of these national systems is documented and evaluated, while the editorial chapters consider the implication of the shift in the East to market-based economies and in the West from social democratic welfare-based policies to entrepreneurial approaches. The book brings together accounts of leisure policies by national experts and is aimed at students of leisure studies and related social sciences, as well as policy-makers and practitioners.
