Tolerance is a defining feature of liberal Western democracy and something that most of us value deeply. We are glad, even grateful, to live in a society where for the most part people are tolerant towards one another, certainly in comparison to many other parts of the world. However, this tolerance is increasingly under threat from the most unlikely of sources - liberalism. This has morphed from a political philosophy that assumes the right to differ, into a form of fascism that seeks to impose conformity, crush dissent and stifle freedom of expression. Given the dominance of liberalism in the West, this poses a very real danger to the health of society and the future of democracy. The purpose of this book is to examine what we mean by tolerance, to show that the increasing diversity of Western society makes it more difficult to find shared values and define the boundaries of tolerance and to demonstrate that the widely held belief that liberals are fundamentally tolerant is a myth. We will then propose a 'tolerance model', the aim of which is to provide a framework that will allow Western society to continue to be open and tolerant, whilst defending its fundamental values.
