Nita's mother is dying. Maybe that's why Nita is testing fate and her own limits by swimming or sailing too far from the shore. Molly is the shy, inhibited one. She's Nita's best friend, and she's the one who knows how to sail. Eddie is the outsider, who finds Nita mysterious and beautiful. Life Belts Nita, Molly, and Eddie are all thirteen, and each of them has a story to tell of what happens to them in their Long Island beach town on those last hot, bright days of summer, those few days when tragedy strikes and changes their lives forever. From the Paperback edition.
Life-Belts is wise and beautifully written, fearless and at times, like life, funny even in the midst of great tragedy. A cross between a novel and a collection of interrelated stories, Life-Belts sustains connections that are almost always clear without being forced. The author seems to be one of those writers who forgets nothing about growing up, but she moves beyond the standard fare of "coming-of-age" novels. One of the greatest strengths of Life-Belts is the writing, of course--Hosie-Bounar creates a world real enough to touch and hear--but equally compelling is the book's unflinching regard and simultaneous celebration of girls' friendships. Far too many books are content to reiterate the same tired old material about mothers and daughters. Hosie-Bounar's is a welcome change. I'd recommend it for anyone who appreciates a good story, teen and adult readers both.

Life Belts is a great book for your early teen child that loves adventure. This book keeps you reading and it is hard to put down because you want to find out what happens next. It is very exciting for the teen reader and it allows the reader to imagine being there at the beach on these hot summer days. The friendships are great and it teaches you how to hold on to your friends during the trying times of life. Every teen reader would enjoy this adventure. I know my 13 year old does.
