Light In The Dark

The author opens, Light in the Dark with a gray-winter November telescopic view of the nation's capital and the Washington Monument with a visible image in the fore ground of the John F. Kennedy's inaugural words on his Memorial Grave site at Arlington Cemetery. In Light in the Dark, the author explores his coming of age feelings, perceptions, emotions, doubts and fears in a 244 page book with over 100 narrative lyrical notes and 130 gray-scaled landscape scenes and theme photographs; complete with insightful overviews of his photographic style, philosophy, exposures setting, films types and printing processes. His good friend and Virginia native mentor, Earl Hamner, Jr., of Walton's Mountain fame said, "He is a most significant photographer and writer of our time. The book reveals a unique and sensitive vision of a journey into light. And, he learned early that his photography could create, reflect and even mirror the simple things in life and celebrate the goodness to be found in most people."

He traces the six stages and phases his life memories and personal interactions in a candid, realistic and 'non-photoshop' manner. Within the writings he reveals a social-psychological look at himself that is reminiscent of his studies and focus on 20th century American Literature while at Sonoma State University, class of 72'. His is a life that has been shaped more by legend and historical circumstance than reality. He examines and sometime in foreboding gray-toned photographs reveals his perceptions of life in the military service while stationed in New York City and community civilian life through lyrical notes about the 1965-68 California protest movement, and his own journalistic naivete and driving desire to capture stories, people and event that he hopes will be remembered.
