Anyone who can hold a brush or pencil can learn to draw--and this complete basic course shows budding artists how to master techniques while making a personal statement and fully experiencing the joys of creativity. Filled to bursting with inspirational color drawings by the author, a professional artist, supported by his unique Artstrips that contain detailed how-to instruction, and the book begins with inexpensive materials and simple exercises to build confidence and expertise. Here are tips on mixing colors and stroke-by-stroke guidance for painting everything from flowers and animals to people and landscapes. Even the relaxed pleasures of scribbling can yield wonderful results, with loosely drawn lines gradually assuming recognizable shapes. Work with silhouettes; sketch with watercolors, brush pens, and soft pastels; and understand how a stroke's direction draws the eye into the painting. From picking up the pen to creating a fine composition in a variety of drawing and painting media, it's everything an artist needs to know!
I like P. Taggart's approach in this series of books. This is one of them. I now have all six books of the series. They cover many different media and he incorporates a lot of techniques one wouldn't think of. They are for both beginners (basics are explained), and more advanced, I feel. This particular book, is as its name implies, Line to Stroke. The line is part of the buildup. It is the underpinning, too, as part of a help in determining the composition. Line to Stroke, emphasizes its direction, curve or angled repeats (hence to the stroke) even to the point of helping to understand good composition (later chapters). Series took me new places, while it leaves nothing to chance for beginners.
