French description: Le present recueil regroupe deux communications presentees devant l'Academie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, l'une en mai 2014 (Sur les universaux du langage), l'autre en juin 2016 (sur Les concepts universels), ainsi que le discours prononce lors de la seance solennelle sous la Coupole en novembre 2015 (La notion de langue universelle). Ces interventions ont en commun de porter sur le theme des langues et de l'universalite. Elles ont ete reproduites sans changement, mais il a paru judicieux d'y ajouter, non seulement une breve Annexe ou sont explicitees les options theoriques qui ont ete prises, mais aussi un chapitre supplementaire (La linguistique et l'universalite) qui montre la place determinante des universaux du langage dans le statut de science que la linguistique revendique. Dedie a la linguistique de l'universel, cet ouvrage procure, en linguistique generale, une synthese novatrice. English summary: This book features two papers given at the Academie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, one in May 2014 ("On the universals of language"), the other in June 2016 (on "Universal concepts"), as well as the speech given at the induction ceremony at the Academie in November 2015 ("On the notion of universal language"). All three have the common topic of languages and universality. They are reproduced here as originally written, but it has been judged useful to add not only a brief addendum explaining the theoretical options chosen, but also an additional chapter ("Linguistics and Universality"), to show how important universals of language are in conferring a scientific status on linguistics, to which it aspires. Dedicated to 'linguistics of the universal', this book provides an innovative synthesis within general linguistics.
