A Good Book for Learning to Read - a review of "Little Red Riding Hood" by Ms. Hillert

I love Margaret Hillert's primers. They are a great resource for those (homeschoolers and others) who are assisting young children to learn to read. This particular book though is not for the very first readers. Though the vocabulary is fairly simple (consisting of 69 different words), there are more words per page that most beginners prefer, plus there is dialog. Words include: can, come, girl, grandmother, have, house, like, little, make, man, mother, pretty, play, something, take, that, walk, where, and yellow. An example of text from page 10 follows so you can judge the level for yourself. "Yes," said Mother. "And here is something good to eat. Take it to Grandmother. Go on, now. Do not play on the way." Five Stars. A reworking of the classic Little Red Riding Hood story. The wolf wears clothes in this book, and no one is hurt. My second semester 1st grader could read it all the way through. Artwork is a little funky but there is great warmth to it.
